Assmannshausen,
picturesque town situated at the most romantic
part of the Rhine, in the north-western corner
of Hessen. With 75 hectares of vines, the largest
continuous area of Spätburgunder [Pinot
Noir] in Germany. Since its birth in 1108 Assmannshausen
has been associated with red wine. A good Assmannshausen
red wine is clearly characterised by the phyllite
slate ground in which the vines grow on very
steep sun-baked slopes. Its high profile has
not only been earned for its good red wine,
but also for its warm lithium springs which
made it an attractive spa destination until
after the war. Today Assmannshausen is a resort
and a destination for outings, which offers
excellent hotels and guest houses. Nature-lovers
and trampers feel just as much at home here
as the discerning gourmet. You’ll be captivated
by the cosy wine cellars, dignified restaurants
and romantic patios, along with the Assmannshausen
Spätburgunder – one of Germany’s
best red wines. |
